In a new series, we will be featuring small businesses with big dreams and aspirations to help others – in different ways.

We had the fortune of working with Leanne Rosen from Leanne’s Piano Studio. We love to bring our creative passion to the world of music and working with Leanne to bring her business to life was a wonderful honour. As a newer business and fellow Starter Company participate in Toronto, we understood the process and what steps she was taking to grow her business. We were able to help her brand her business with a new logo and bring some pop to her recital programs.

It was a no brainer to ask her to be our first profile. Here’s what she had to say about starting her business and a little advice for those aspiring business owners. If you know anyone in the GTA looking for piano lessons, Leanne is your expert!

Background about your business – what you do, what you provide, how long you have been in business

I am a private piano teacher in Richmond Hill, Ontario. I provide weekly private lessons as well as group classes, recitals and preparation for exams and festivals. I have been in business for 5 years.

Your business background – Does it run in the family? Education? History?

I have always enjoyed working independently and have been interested in entrepreneurship since high school. My grandfather and father both run their own businesses and have said that the risk and potential lack of stability is far outweighed by the freedom of being your own boss. I have been studying music since I was 6 years old, and went on to earn a Master’s degree in piano performance and pedagogy from the University of Toronto. I wasn’t sure I would enjoy working with children, but after my first year of working one on one with them in private lessons I loved it. I think I may enjoy spending time with children more than adults

What advice would you suggest to aspiring business owners?

Opportunity won’t come knocking at your door, you have to go out and create opportunities for yourself. Go to networking events, apply for grants, and put yourself out there!

Where do you see your business in 5 years, 10 years?

I hope to have a full studio of highly committed students. I also hope to expand my services to preschool group lessons, summer camps, lessons for seniors and enrichment programs. I also would like to start composing pieces for beginners and possibly work on a beginner method book.

What has been your most successful marketing tactic?

My most successful marketing tactic has been keeping my current students and their families happy. I do this by hosting recitals and group classes, creating incentive programs and always trying to bring new material to lessons to keep things fresh and exciting. As a result, I’ve retained their business and have received numerous referrals. I have also been very active on local Facebook groups where I can promote my business at no cost.

Who inspired you to go into business and why?

There is no one person that inspired me to start my own business. Rather, I was inspired by my own experiences. Through working a number of part time jobs, I never felt that working for someone else was right for me. I enjoy taking charge, making decisions and leading others which lends naturally to entrepreneurship.

Common Myths About SEO

Companies may tend to invest a lot of their time and resources into SEO which in real sense is an excellent marketing strategy as it involves use of the internet to market their content via websites. However, some companies go down the wrong path unknowingly and become resentful as much has been invested into Search Engine Optimization. We always encourage business owners to do their research and learn a little bit about SEO before investing or doing it themselves.

FAQ: How do I promote my business with no money?

We get asked this question quite frequently and the answer can differ depending on who you talk to. The one thing that we will tell you is there is always going to be a cost to promoting your business. What most people forget is that time is money as well. So you could hustle and do everything on your own without outsourcing or purchasing anything. But the one thing you have to think about is what’s the value of your time in order to complete all the tasks to make it happen? Is it $15 per hour? Is $1000 per campaign? or more?
