Perhaps one of our favourite times of the years is Superbowl season. Not only is it a good game (usually) but it’s also the time were we see the best of the best in the marketing world.
For some people they like watching 60 minutes of football, others like the halftime show but for some it’s tuning in to be wow’d by the 30-60 seconds of awesome commercials. We watched a few and compiled our list of our winner’s and losers.
Budweiser – Wind Never Felt Better
– Best in Environment
Budweiser traditionally always has great commercials and they don’t deviant too far from their roots. Each year, they feature their recognizable Clydesdale horses but this year they took a different spin. They took the environmental approach – their ‘horsepower’ in their manufacturing facilities is now 100% renewable electricity from wind power.
Amazon – Alexa
– Most Authentic
Perhaps on of the biggest trends we will see in 2019 is the further use of devices to make our life a little easier. But, sometimes they don’t always work out the way we hope. We give kudos to Amazon and Alexa for admitting a few ‘fails’ and being authentic with the trial and errors in development.
Bumble – App
– Best Message
One word comes to mind with this commercial. Inspiration. For many young girls, it can be a challenge. Living up to expectations, striving to reach goals and trying to avoid ‘no, you can’t do it’. Bumble may have hit the nail on the head with this. Reach for your goals, the sky is the limit if you just go for it.
Hyundai – The Elevator
– Missed the Mark
Hyundai does sell cars right? As cool as it is to see Jason Bateman manning the elevator, what does a stop at the dentist, jury duty, dinner parties have to do with cars? Maybe the journey to get to what brand the commercial was about took a little too long? What’s your thoughts?
Doritos – Flamin’ Hot Nacho
– Maybe a Comeback?
This may have been the one that had us stumped. What does Chance the rapper and the Backstreet Boys have in common? We still aren’t sure. Yes, it was cool that Backstreet Boys are back in the tube but was the launch of a new Doritos flavour the best place? Maybe ‘we want it that a way….”.
Our Super Bowl Commercial Winner…
Verizon – The Team That Wouldn’t Be Here
– Pulls at the Heart Strings
Some things just can’t be conveyed in 30-60 seconds. Each year, there is always one company that just pulls on your heart strings. Verizon did something very unique this year in that their was 30 second commercials ran during the game but each one had an accompanying 2-3 minute longer video. They took 12 NFL players or coaches and shared their near death stories and used it as a way to thank our first responders.
