What to Expect When Working With a Solo Designer

When you’re looking for someone to build your website or redesign your brand, you have options. Agencies, freelancers, template platforms, that person your neighbour mentioned — there’s no shortage of choices.

So when someone chooses to work with a solo designer like me, I think it’s worth being honest about what that actually means. What you’re getting into. What the process looks like. And why, for a lot of small business owners, it ends up being exactly the right fit.

You’re Working With One Person — the Whole Way Through

At Creative Atmosphere, there’s no account manager who passes your project to a designer who hands it to a developer. It’s me, start to finish.

That means the person you talk to in the discovery call is the same person who designs your logo, builds your website, and answers your email when something needs updating six months later. There’s no brief that gets lost in translation. No “let me check with the team.” Just a direct line to the person who actually knows your project.

For some people, that level of continuity is exactly what they’ve been looking for. For others, it’s a new way of working — and that’s okay too. Either way, I think it’s important you know what to expect.

There’s no brief that gets lost in translation. No “let me check with the team.” Just a direct line to the person who actually knows your project.

The Process Is Collaborative, Not Transactional

A lot of business owners come to me having had experiences where they handed over a brief and got back something that didn’t quite fit. That’s frustrating — and it usually happens when the process doesn’t leave enough room for the relationship.

My process is built around conversation. Before I design anything, I want to understand your business — not just what it does, but how you talk about it, who your clients are, what you want them to feel when they land on your site. That discovery work isn’t a formality. It’s where the good design actually comes from.

From there, we move through design concepts, feedback rounds, and revisions together. You’re not waiting in the dark. You’re part of the process at every stage.

Timelines Are Real — and Worth Talking About Upfront

Solo doesn’t mean slow — but it does mean I’m honest about capacity. I take on projects I can do well, not projects that fill a schedule.

When we start working together, I’ll give you a clear timeline based on the scope of the project and where it falls in my current workload. If you have a hard deadline — a launch date, an event, a season — tell me early. The more I know upfront, the better I can plan around what you actually need.

Good design takes time. Rushed design tends to show. I’d rather have an honest conversation about timing than overpromise and underdeliver.

I’m Here After the Project Is Done

One of the things I hear most from clients is that they didn’t realize how much they’d value having someone they could call after the project wrapped up.

Whether it’s a quick update, a new page, a question about their hosting, or just wanting to talk through what’s next — I’m still there. Not as a new project with a new quote for every small thing, but as someone who already knows your business and wants to see it keep growing.

That ongoing relationship is something I genuinely value. It’s one of the reasons I work the way I do.

Is Working With a Solo Designer Right for You?

Honestly? It’s not the right fit for everyone. If you need a large team, a very fast turnaround on a complex project, or a range of specialized services under one roof — an agency might serve you better.

But if you’re a small business owner who wants someone who will actually learn your business, communicate clearly, and care about the outcome the same way you do — I think you’ll find that a solo studio offers something most agencies can’t.

If you’re curious whether we’d be a good fit, the best place to start is a discovery call. It’s a relaxed, no-pressure conversation — just a chance to see if what I do lines up with what you need. I’d love to hear what you’re working on.
