Your Website Isn’t Working For You — Here’s Why

You spent time on it. Maybe you hired someone, or you built it yourself on a late night when you finally had a free hour. Either way, your website exists — and that feels like a win.

But here’s something I see a lot: a website that looks fine and a website that’s actually working for your business are two very different things.

If you’ve ever looked at your site and thought “something’s off, but I’m not sure what” — this one’s for you. Here are three signs your website might be quietly costing you inquiries.

1. Your Website Is Hard to Navigate on a Phone

More than half of all website traffic comes from mobile devices. That number is even higher for local service businesses, where people are often searching on the go — between meetings, waiting in a parking lot, or scrolling during their lunch break.

If your website isn’t easy to use on a phone — if the text is tiny, the buttons are hard to tap, or the layout feels jumbled on a small screen — people leave. And they don’t come back.

A responsive, mobile-friendly design isn’t a bonus anymore. It’s the baseline. If your site was built more than a few years ago and hasn’t been updated, there’s a good chance it’s not holding up on mobile the way it should.

If your site was built more than a few years ago and hasn’t been updated, there’s a good chance it’s not holding up on mobile the way it should.

2. It Takes Too Long to Get to the Point

When someone lands on your website, they’re asking one question: “Is this the right person for what I need?”

They’re not reading every word. They’re scanning. And if they can’t quickly find the answer to that question — if your homepage is vague, your services are buried, or your call to action isn’t clear — they’re gone.

This doesn’t mean your website needs to be stripped down or salesy. It means every page should have a purpose, and that purpose should be obvious within the first few seconds. What do you do? Who do you do it for? What should someone do next?

If you can’t answer those three questions by looking at your homepage for five seconds, it’s worth revisiting.

3. You’re Not Showing Up in Local Search

A beautiful website that no one finds isn’t a website. It’s a missed opportunity.

If someone in Woodstock or Brantford searched for what you offer right now, would your website show up? For many small businesses, the honest answer is: not really.

This usually comes down to SEO — search engine optimization — which sounds more complicated than it needs to be. At its core, it’s about making sure Google understands who you are, what you do, and where you’re located. Things like having the right keywords on your pages, a complete Google Business profile, and a site that loads quickly all play a role.

You don’t need to rank globally. You need to be found by the right people, locally. And with a little intentional work, that’s absolutely possible.

So What Do You Do About It?

The good news is that none of these are permanent problems. They’re fixable — and fixing them can make a real difference in how many inquiries your website brings in.

Sometimes it’s a full redesign. Sometimes it’s targeted updates to an existing site. Sometimes it’s a conversation to figure out what’s actually going on before making any decisions.
